While other photographers were documenting the darker side of New York in the 80s, I was photographing the interesting things. Capturing the never ending array of characters, performers as well as the colorful street scenes.

MEET BATTMAN
Being a kid with the name Alan Batt had its quirks. I can’t remember when it began, but my friends started calling me Battman. It was in 1984 that I put Photography by Battman on my NYC greeting card racks that were in stores. In the 90’s, I was the lead photographer for Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, Chinese New Year Celebration, started 25 years of the NYC Fire Firefighters Calendar, 23 years of The New Years Eve Celebration and The Drama Desk Awards.
I was also working with the Empire State Building and had an exhibition on the 80th floor for 14 years. Fast forward to 2001, I began my career in food photography, working with over 600 chefs to photograph 31 cookbooks, 28 of them self-published. Then in 2004 we had the first of 9 annual “The Great Gathering of Chefs” bringing together up to 160 chefs together to raise money for various kids charities.
After being a photographer for more than 40 years, I’ve decided to bring back my original photos and publish another book “Takin’ It To The Streets” to bring back memories to remind us of the good times and show the new generations what living in New York City during 80’s was like.
